Overview of the CareerSource Heartland Region

• The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Heartland region (DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands,
and Okeechobee counties) was 4.8 percent in August 2019. This rate was equal to the region's year
ago rate of 4.8 percent. The labor force was 75,835, up 680 (+0.9) over the year. There were 3,616
unemployed residents in the region.


• Desoto County and Okeechobee County had the lowest unemployment rate (3.9 percent) in the
CareerSource Heartland region followed by Highlands County (5.2 percent), and Hardee County (6.3
percent).


• Employment by industry in the CareerSource Heartland region totaled 56,312 jobs in March 2019
(the latest available data). Industry employment decreased by -2.9 percent over the year.
• The annual job growth rates for construction (+7.9 percent); financial activities (+5.4
percent); other services (+1.5 percent); and information (+0.3 percent) was equal to or exceeded
those of the state.


• The CareerSource Heartland region’s industry employment decreased by -1,674 jobs over the year
in March 2019. Seven of the 11 industries added jobs over the year. The industries that gained the
most jobs included: construction (+236 jobs); education and health services (+202 jobs); financial
activities (+85 jobs); and trade, transportation, and utilities (+75 jobs).


• In August 2019 nonagricultural employment in the Sebring MSA was 25,900, an increase of 300 jobs
(+1.2 percent) over the year.
