Overview of the CareerSource Heartland Region

• The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Heartland region (DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, and Okeechobee counties) was 3.9 percent in May 2019. This rate was 0.1 percentage point lower than the region's year ago rate of 4.0 percent. The labor force was 77,541, down 230 (-0.3) over the year. There were 3,000 unemployed residents in the region.


• Desoto County had the lowest unemployment rate (3.1 percent) in the CareerSource Heartland region followed by Okeechobee County (3.2 percent), Highlands County (4.3 percent), and Hardee County (4.6 percent)

.
• Employment by industry in the CareerSource Heartland region totaled 56,370 jobs in December 2018 (the latest available data). Industry employment decreased by -2.7 percent over the year.


• The annual job growth rates for information (+18.9 percent); financial activities (+6.0 percent); other services (+3.8 percent); and government (+1.5 percent) exceeded those of the state

.
• The CareerSource Heartland region’s industry employment decreased by -1,591 jobs over the year in December 2018. Seven of the 11 industries added jobs over the year. The industries that gained the most jobs included: education and health services (+158 jobs); government (+157 jobs); financial activities (+94 jobs); and leisure and hospitality (+94 jobs).


• In May 2019 nonagricultural employment in the Sebring MSA was 26,300, an increase of 100 jobs (+0.4 percent) over the year.
