Q: What are “Work Opportunity Tax Credits”?

A. The Work Opportunity Tax credit (WOTC) is a federal income tax credit that provides incentives to private for-profit employers to encourage the hiring of individuals from targeted groups of jobseekers who traditionally have difficulty finding employment. The amount of WOTC can vary between $1,200 and $9,000 depending on the individual hired. Employers must apply for and receive certification that their new hire is a member of one of the WOTC targeted groups before they can claim the credit on their federal income tax return.
